SENCO Training

Outline

The aim of this two day course delivered by the Early Years SEN Service, is to support you in your role as a SENCO, increase your knowledge about the legislation around SEND and enable you to understand and put into place Derbyshire's procedures. This course links to the following EYFS areas: Unique Child / Positive Relationships / Learning and Development / Enabling Environments.

Description

This course covers:
  • responsibilities of the setting SENCO
  • legal requirements
  • local authority procedures
  • writing IEPs

Other similar courses to support the role of the SENCO include SENCO Briefings and focussed training on specific areas of SEN, including 'Including Children with Autism in Early Years Settings', 'Understanding Sensory Processing Needs', 'Teaching Strategies for Young Children with SEND' and Makaton.

Outcomes

By the end of the course, delegates will:
  • have an understanding of the role of the SENCO in an early years setting
  • have knowledge about Derbyshire’s support services for children with SEND. You will be able to make a referral to the Early Years Panel for involvement of a Specialist Support Service and/or ETAEYS Funding to support a child
  • have experience of planning long term learning outcomes and short term targets for a child with SEN
  • have knowledge about the legislation surrounding the SENCO role e.g. SEND Code of Practice, Equality Act

Please bring your own copies of the Early Years Descriptors and the Early Years SEN Guidance. Please note, you will need to re-do the SENCO course every 2 years to ensure you remain up to date with current legislation and documentation.
