Newly Qualified Teachers: Phonics and Reading in Reception and Key Stage 1

Improving the Teaching of Phonics and Reading for Newly Qualified Teachers

Outline

Delegates will become familiar with the key skills required to teach phonics effectively. They will understand the elements of a balanced reading programme.

Description

Afternoon 1 - Phonics: Drawing on the course 'Twenty Minutes a Day', we will consider the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to teach phonics in Phases 2-5, including pure sounds; blending to read; segmenting to spell; teaching tricky words; using nonsense words to support early decoding skills; developing children’s phonological awareness and effective delivery of the four-part teaching sequence. Next, we will consider effective strategies to maximise learning in the ‘apply’ section of the 20 minute session, with a focus on paired learning.

Afternoon 2 - We will explore the key components of a balanced reading programme and consider how modelling and effective prompts can enable us to support children's reading development in guided and shared reading.

Teachers' Standards 3: Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge: if teaching early reading, demonstrate a clear understanding of systematic synthetic phonics
Teachers' Standards 4: Plan and teach well-structured lessons
Teachers' Standards 5: Adapting teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils
