Mastery in Mathematics in the EYFS

Outline

An introduction to mastery mathematics approaches in EYFS.

Description

The course will explore the ‘big ideas’ in early mathematics that ensure children have a strong foundation of knowledge and understanding and how these ‘big ideas’ can be incorporated into the classroom. Delegates will consider practical approaches to help children develop and secure mathematical thinking skills. The course will consider the Characteristics of Effective Learning alongside the Principles of Mastery.

Outcomes

By the end of the course, delegates will:
  • have a secure understanding of how children learn mathematics and relate this to how a mastery approach might look in their setting
  • have explored a range of pedagogical approaches to teaching early mathematics
  • will have experienced a range of practical activities to use in their settings.
