Lower Attaining Readers at Key Stage 2: Moving to Age-Related Expectations

Improving Reading Outcomes

Outline

This course will support Key Stage 2 teachers to accelerate progress to support lower attaining readers to move towards age-related expectations.

Description

‘It is essential that, by the end of their primary education, all pupils are able to read fluently, and with confidence, in any subject in their forthcoming secondary education.’ (2014 National Curriculum)

We will:
  • consider the intent of the reading curriculum: the skills pupils need to read fluently and with confidence throughout the whole curriculum
  • develop understanding of the barriers which may limit progress in reading
  • identify evidence-informed approaches to implementation to improve reading outcomes.

Our focus will be on pupils working below age-related expectations in reading in Key Stage 2.

This course will develop participants’ understanding of the reading skills pupils need to meet the end point challenge of the KS2 Reading SATs paper and to access the reading demands of the Y7 curriculum with confidence. We will consider a range of effective teaching approaches to support pupils to develop these skills. We will consider how to ‘make learning visible’ and a range of approaches to assess reading. Participants will leave with a toolkit of strategies they can ‘mix and match’ to meet the needs of pupils in their class.

The course draws upon recent research from the Education Endowment Foundation in the Key Stage 2 Literacy Guidance Report which emphasises effective strategies such as metacognition, self-regulation, fluency, inference and decoding.
